About the workshop THE ISLAND

Eight refugees from different walks of life come together to develop and produce short films on the festival theme “JETZT / NOW”. That was the content of this year’s experimental film workshop DIE INSEL.

The idea for DIE INSEL was born in 2016 as part of the Refugee Class at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. Since then, the workshop has taken place under the direction of Jean Boué, this year for the first time in collaboration with FILM WITHOUT BORDERS, the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF is a cooperation partner.

“DIE INSEL is open-ended, it is always experimental in its results due to a very short development process. This is exactly what makes it so appealing: the participants work together, wrestle with each other and complement each other’s ideas – in the end, they are successful as a team,” says Jean Boué about the workshop, which took place in Kuhbrücke, a remote location on the German-Polish border.

“This time there were filmmakers who had fled their home countries due to political persecution; from Ukraine and Iran, from Syria, Russia and Pakistan. A colorful bunch of artists in exile. Working with such diverse personalities is intense, which is why a team accompanied the process. This year, Angelina Urbanzcyk (storytelling), Carmela Daza (camera) and Lambert Regel (sound design) were involved
