A Shabbat dinner spirals out of control: for the first time, all parents and in-laws are gathered around the table—when a sudden death (or possibly even a murder?) shatters the long-awaited harmony. What begins as a traditional family evening quickly escalates into an explosive comedy full of panicked cover-ups, cultural clashes, and absurd twists.

The scene: a living room where parents and in-laws meet—a situation already fraught with tension. The discovery of a dead body in the bathroom doesn’t exactly help. Nor does the fact that the corpse needs to be discreetly removed… without violating the rules of Shabbat.

Director and co-writer Daniel Robbins set out to root his film deeply in the world of New York’s Jewish community. Shot in an apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the story revolves around characters who are at home in a secular world but still take their faith seriously. Layered onto this patchwork of religious and everyday life is the generational divide: old vs. young, know-it-all vs. defiant, secretive vs. self-important—everything that makes family life so wonderfully messy.

A whirlwind of a film that deservedly won the Audience Award at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

“One of the funniest, laugh-out-loud-est films since Mel Brooks picked up a camera. Period.” (New Jersey Jewish News)
