Joshua is constantly chatting with the digital clone of his deceased first love. Christi seeks reassurance that her deceased best friend is doing well in heaven, but experiences a harrowing encounter with his AI image. Jang Ji-Sung meets the VR clone of her deceased 7-year-old daughter. People around the world are using AI services to “bring the dead back to life”. In their documentary, Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck follow the pioneers and first users of this technology, which aims to make death obsolete. The inventors deny any responsibility for the profound psychological consequences, while numerous competitors are hoping for a lucrative market as religious and collective forms of mourning lose relevance.
The film shows curious, amusing and disturbing encounters with the digital undead and poses the questions: Do we want this? Who will take responsibility for the psychological and ethical consequences? Is this the beginning of the end of finiteness?
