“Subtle, powerful – and hauntingly resonant.” – The Guardian
A summer in Rio, early 1970s. The Paiva family lives by the beach – five children, a house filled with voices, music, and warmth. But when father Rubens is taken away by the military police one day and never returns, the family’s peaceful world is suddenly shattered. Yet out of helplessness comes determination – Rubens’ wife Eunice refuses to be silenced. She fights against fear, against forgetting. Between children’s bedrooms, courtrooms, and street protests, she finds her own voice and grows beyond herself.
I’m Still Here tells this true story with quiet force and emotional depth. In calm, intimate images and with a keen sense of closeness and loss, director Walter Salles draws a family portrait in the shadow of Brazil’s military dictatorship.
The film was awarded Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival and won the 2025 Academy Award for Best International Feature.
