In Kenya this film which tells the story of lesbian love and shows a hopeful view towards the future, was forbidden. Nevertheless it was invited to the Film Festival in Cannes 2018 as its very first Kenyan film. Kena is taught from the very beginning that girls have to be good and behave in order to become good and honest wives. Her mother, who single-handedly brings up Kena, is made responsible for the fact that her father left her for a younger woman. This new wife is even expecting a son. But Kena wants to make more of her life – just like Ziki who lives in the same neighborhood and dreams of travelling around the world. These two women become friends even though their families are political rivals. When they fall in love they are forced to choose between either social acceptance or personal happiness.
