“A heartbreaking work of shattering genius…“! SAM NOW is unlike any other movie I’ve ever seen.. a truly remarkable work of art that I will never forget.” (Chris Burlingame, THE SUNBREAK)

Sam Harkness and his family in Seattle are devastated when his mother Jois suddenly disappears. Years later, Sam and his half-brother embark on a road trip to the West Coast to decipher cryptic clues and find their mother. But this is only the beginning of their story. The film explores Sam’s 25 years of searching for answers, addressing intergenerational trauma and familial dysfunction and healing. Through personal revelations, home movies and experimental films by his brother Reed Harkness, we experience their emotional journey and join Sam on his 2,000 mile road trip.

“Sensitive and surprising… a movie whose emotional reality seems to unfold before your eyes… Attentively edited, the film blends the perspectives of many family members without passing judgment, developing a painful poignancy reminiscent of recent family dramas (..),  a mature reckoning with love, pain, independence and hard-won wisdom.” (Nicolas Rapold, The New York Times)

Followed by a film talk with director Reed Harkness
