Dust swirls, little feet pound the hot streets of Mogadishu—and suddenly you’re right in the middle of nine-year-old Samia’s unstoppable race. Every morning, she races her best friend, full of joie de vivre and unbridled determination, always one step ahead. But in Somalia, sports are forbidden for women, and Samia’s dream of participating in the big city run seems unattainable.

Despite her mother’s warnings and the dangers of her surroundings, Samia continues to train in secret – driven by the hope of one day competing for her country in the Olympic Games. When she becomes the first woman to win the race, her life changes radically.

Director Yasemin Şamdereli tells the true story of Somali athlete Samia Yusuf Omar with great sensitivity and power. SAMIA is a touching portrait of courage, freedom, and the unshakeable belief in a dream – and the question of how far you can go when the system is against you.
