THE WAR SHOW

© Obeidah Zytoon

War as a show in real-time, as a propaganda machine used by all parties for their own ends: a powerful documentary about the beginning of the Syrian conflict which received an award at the Venice Film Festival. Obaidah Zytoon is a Syrian Radio DJ. At the beginning
of the Syrian rebellion she starts to document the life of her friends – later completed by footage by the Danish documentary film-maker Andreas Dalsgaard. She shows the euphoria of the beginning as it still seems that the protest movement has been a peaceful success – the shortlived notion of freedom that young people grasped; happy and intimate moments of living together. But soon the mood turns. Violence escalates on all sides. Good and evil are increasingly difficult to tell apart. How are the pictures that are broadcast all over the world created? And whom do they benefit? A film about the impossiblity to distinguish between the truth and lies in this war.
