Halberstadt in the summer of 1990: Maren, Robert and Volker have known each other since childhood. Rather by chance, they find the GDR’s millions stored there to rot in an old mine shaft and smuggle out rucksacks full of money. Together with their friends and neighbours, they develop an ingenious system to exchange the now worthless money for goods and cheat the onrushing Westerners and their capitalism.
Natja Brunckhorst was able to draw on true events for her summer comedy: Millions of marks from the GDR migrated to underground vaults near Halberstadt for the currency union. It is certain that money was stolen from these tunnels, but to this day nobody knows exactly how much.
The director developed her story from this source: a humorous adventure in a time when anything seemed possible. It is about money and justice – and about what really counts in life: Friendship and family.
Followed by a film talk with actor Ronald Zehrfeld and Peter Kurth.
