Film screening at Cinema by Velotel
This exciting and moving documentary focuses on six so-called burrneshas who live an ancient tradition in the remote mountains of northern Albania: they deny their female identity and assume a male role, renouncing marriage and family—and thus escaping patriarchal constraints, violence, and dependence. The film by Kristine Nrecaj and Birthe Templin accompanies these extraordinary women with great intimacy and respect. With impressive images and sensitive portraits, the film tells a story of courage, identity, and a life beyond social expectations. It raises the question of what gender really means—and what freedom can look like when you have to create it for yourself.
A quiet, powerful film that moves and lingers long after viewing.
The screening will be followed by a film discussion with directors Kristine Nrecaj and Birthe Templin.
