Als das Ehepaar aus der Nachbarwohnung, Alex und seiner Partnerin C\u00e9cile, zur Entbindung ins Krankenhaus muss, erkl\u00e4rt sich die Buchh\u00e4ndlerin bereit, auf den sechsj\u00e4hrigen Sohn Elliot aufzupassen, obwohl die Mitte 50-J\u00e4hrige mit Kindern wenig anzustellen vermag. Bei der Geburt kommt es allerdings zu Komplikationen, und die Mutter stirbt.<\/p><p>Sandra w\u00e4chst in der folgenden Zeit nicht nur f\u00fcr den Jungen immer mehr in die Rolle einer wichtigen weiblichen Bezugsperson hinein, sondern auch f\u00fcr den verwitweten Vater und das Neugeborene, die Tochter Lucille. Alex ist mit David, Elliots leiblichem Vater, befreundet. Es entsteht eine tiefe Bindung zwischen Sandra und den trauernden Hinterbliebenen, auch wenn sie dabei austarieren muss, wo ihre Grenzen sind.
