Berlin, late 19th century: Alexander Hoffmann is an ambitious PhD student in ethnology. When a delegation of Herero and Nama from the colony of „German South-West Africa” travels to Berlin in the course of the „German Colonial Exhibition“, Hoffmann meets the group's interpreter, Kezia Kambazembi. Hoffmann develops an intense interest in the Herero and Nama—and, following encounters and conversations with them, contradicts the prevailing evolutionist racial theory. A short time later, the uprising of the Herero and Nama in the German colony leads to war. Hoffmann travels through the country with soldiers and witnesses the atrocities committed by the colonial army. But Hoffmann also crosses moral boundaries when his patron in Berlin asks him to send skulls and skeletons of killed Herero to Germany for the purpose of racial research. When the ethnologist hears that Kezia is said to be in a concentration camp on Shark Island, his own degeneration reaches its peak. His search for Kezia becomes a journey into the darkness of the 20th century's first genocide. The film premiered at the 2023 Berlinale.

Following the screening, a discussion with filmmaker Lars Kraume and Herero descendant and activist Israel Kaunatjike.
