OECONOMIA

Screening at Cinema Bad Saarow

Post-screening discussion with the financial journalist Semirah Kenawi

Beyond the detached formulas of financial reporting, which do not focus on understanding the big picture, documentary filmmaker Carmen Losmann sets out with great acuity to examine the structure of contemporary capitalism.

With „Oeconomia“, the German director undertakes a journey into the strategic center of neoliberal politics. An ambitious and difficult endeavor, because many insiders in the banking and financial sector prefer not to speak in front of a camera—and those who agree to do so are more than once at a loss for words. As transparent as the architecture of banks and financial institutions presents itself, the doors close just as quickly for the investigating director. She turns necessity into a virtue by using telephone transcripts and computer-generated images, among other things, to make the abstract and difficult-to-understand more vivid.
