The film, which tells the story of lesbian love and takes a hopeful look into the future, was banned in Kenya. However, it was the first Kenyan film ever to be invited to the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Kena learns early on in her life that girls in Kenya have to be good and well-behaved so that they can later become good, well-behaved wives. Her mother, who is raising Kena alone, is blamed for her husband leaving her for a younger woman. Now his new wife is also expecting a son. But Kena wants to do more with her life. So does Ziki, who is the same age, lives in the same neighborhood and dreams of traveling the world. The two young women become friends despite the political rivalry between their families. When they fall in love, they are forced to choose between personal happiness and social acceptance.
