Director Felix Moeller portrays his mother, Margarethe von Trotta, and her companions during the politically charged 1970s. Forty years later, he conducted interviews with his mother and his stepfather Volker Schlöndorff, was granted access to von Trotta's diaries, and interviewed other friends and contemporary witnesses such as Daniel Cohn-Bendit, René Böll, Christof Wackernagel, and Karl-Heinz Dellwo.

At that time, due to their political views, many artists and intellectuals were viewed—sometimes unjustly—as sympathizers of the RAF terrorists. In his historical documentary, Felix Moeller traces their convictions through very personal conversations, combines the interviews with contemporary photo and film material, and revives the so-called „German Autumn“ as a combination of family, film, and contemporary history.
