From delivery services and ride-sharing to tagging images for AI, millions of people are now working in the digital labor market, which is now worth over USD 5 trillion and growing at breakneck speed. The important question of the stories and working conditions of these workers, most of whom are paid less than minimum wage around the world and who are making this technological revolution possible in the first place, are mostly hidden from view.

„THE GIG IS UP“ highlights the largely depressing stories of people who are lured by promises of flexible working hours and independence, as well as control over time and money, but find a very different reality. Working conditions often turn out to be dangerous, pay changes without notice and they can be made redundant at short notice through deactivation or a bad review.

This film by director Shannon Walsh shows the brutal reality of the nameless workers behind the technology boom, which in the end only benefits the giant corporations.
