Announcement of the 2023 Wolfgang Kohlhaase Fellow

The Wolfgang Kohlhaase Scholarship is a funding program in cooperation with Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Antonius Jugend- und Kulturförderung e.V., Lupa Film GmbH, and FILM OHNE GRENZEN e.V. The scholarship is aimed at international filmmakers who want to discover Berlin and Brandenburg, as well as filmmakers who live in Berlin or Brandenburg and want to develop international film projects.

FALLING LEAVES, the new film by cult director Aki Kaurismäki, tells the story of two lonely people (Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen) who randomly meet in the Helsinki night. Both are searching for the first, only, and ultimate love of their lives. The path to this honorable goal is hindered by the man's alcoholism, lost phone numbers, not knowing each other's name and address—and not least by life's general tendency to put obstacles in the way of those seeking their happiness.

This gentle tragicomedy, which was awarded the Jury Prize in Cannes, can be seen as the „fourth part“ of Aki Kaurismäki's proletariat trilogy („Shadows in Paradise“, „Ariel“, and „The Match Factory Girl“).
