As a committed communist, Antonia Berger had gone to the Soviet Union in the 1930s. But there she was wrongfully suspected of espionage and sentenced to several years in a labor camp in Siberia. When she is released in 1952 and returns with her daughter to the still-young GDR, she looks forward to a fresh start. Finally, she can help build a new socialist society. But to do so, she has to sign a severe restriction: she must keep her experiences in the great socialist brother state to herself.

So that „it wasn't all for nothing,“ Antonia endures the muzzle and lets her new love move to the West alone. She cannot and will not give up her belief in the new state and her socialist ideals. The consequences are doubt and bitterness until the fall of the Wall in 1989. A film that illustrates the split between ideal and party discipline that was barely bearable for many followers of socialism.
