On the Thursday of the festival, pupils from the Oder-Spree district watched excerpts from the rbb production „24hEuropa - The Next Generation“ as part of the FILM OHNE GRENZEN school cinema. Afterwards, they discussed what they had seen with director Britt Beyer and the two protagonists and activists Natalia Pancewisz and Marta Lempart.
A second group of pupils watched the film „Kleine Germanen“ by Mohammad Farokhmanesh and Frank Geiger in another school screening. The documentary combines animation and documentary film to tell the stories of children who grew up in right-wing extremist families. The screening was followed by a discussion with director Mohammad Farokhmanesh.
Workshops:
SYMPHONY OF THE SMALL TOWN
This year's third FILM WITHOUT BORDERS workshop for people with and without a history of flight took place in June: Under the guidance of Anna Faroqhi & Haim Peretz, Berlin artists and authors of experimental documentary films, as well as composers and sound artists Eunice Martins and Laura Mello, around 20 refugee residents of the Fuchsbau transition home in Petersdorf, young people from the Nord Fürstenwalde youth club and apprentices from various trades in Storkow and Bad Saarow worked on the film project „Symphony of the Small Town“.
The two-part workshop first brought the refugees into contact with the work in the companies and gave the participants their first insights and activities. At the same time, the participants received a crash course in handling HD cameras and sound equipment so that they could work both in front of and behind the camera. A short film essay on the topic of „work“ was created.
In the second part of the workshop, the images, based on the classic silent film „Berlin - Symphony of a Metropolis“, were set to music using the resulting sound recordings and original musical creations. „The participants should have the opportunity to perceive realities of life beyond their own environment and capture them in images and sounds,“ says Anna Faroqhi. The result is a multifaceted cinematic and musical montage; encounters, relationships and opportunities for teaching and work have come about. „I wish that such encounters were part of everyday life,“ says Faroqhi.
Like all other workshop projects, „Symphony of a Small Town“ will celebrate its premiere at the FILM WITHOUT BORDERS Festival 2019.

MIX IT
The school project „Mix it“ - an initiative of the German Film Academy and bildberbewegen e.V., realized for the first time in cooperation with FILM OHNE GRENZEN - took place with great success in Fürstenwalde from 3 to 7 June: 30 young people with and without a history of flight from the Oberstufenzentrum Palmnicken (Europaschule OSZ Oder-Spree) made three short films together on the subject of „Elections“.
The first film is all about the fictitious party FMP - „Fürstenwalder Mixed Party“ - which was developed by the pupils themselves for the film project. The other film is about a girl who is allowed to vote but doesn't want to - and about a boy who wants to vote but isn't allowed to. The third film is a documentary about the project week. While working on the films, the young people dealt with highly topical issues: where do they stand as young people on political issues? What do they think about migration? What prejudices do they have and who are their (political) role models?
For Wanissou Bounou from Benin, this week fulfills a long-cherished wish: „The workshop is so nice above all because the refugees and the locals can finally really come together by working together on the films and get to know each other in a completely different way as a team.“
In the presence of the participants and other guests, the three films will celebrate their big premiere at the FILM WITHOUT BORDERS festival.

360° workshop
The first film workshop took place this March in cooperation with DASI Berlin GmbH. The project was aimed at young people who are no longer able to live at home for a variety of reasons and are therefore supported by the Diakonische Arbeitsgemeinschaft Sozialpädagogischer Initiativen. Guided by VR journalists Christiane Wittenbecher and Susanne Dickel from the company IntoVR, the young people produced a 360° film. Together they developed the concept, the script and the shooting schedule. They had to deal with the content of this year's festival theme „W I R“. The sub-theme of their film, which the young people chose themselves in an initial process, was bullying.
The head of DASI Berlin emphasized the importance of such a film workshop for the young people: „They experience enormous independence and learn what it means to be creative and create something. This strengthens and consolidates their personality - qualities that will help them in their future lives.“ The workshop was sponsored by the Berliner Sparkasse Foundation.
Further workshops will take place in the summer and during the festival week for young people from Brandenburg and from other cultures.
