Maren, Robert and Volker have known each other since childhood in Halberstadt in the summer of 1990. Rather by chance, they find millions of (almost) worthless East German marks in an old mine shaft, which have been stored there to rot. The three of them manage to smuggle backpacks full of money out of the shaft. Together with their friends and neighbors, they develop an ingenious system to exchange the now worthless money for goods and cheat the onrushing Westerners and their capitalism.

Natja Brunckhorst was able to draw on true events for her summer comedy: Millions of marks from the GDR wandered into underground vaults near Halberstadt during the currency union. It is certain that money was stolen from these tunnels, but to this day nobody knows how much was actually involved.

The director developed her story from this template: a humorous adventure in a time when anything seemed possible. It is about money and justice - and about what really counts in life: Friendship and family.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with actor Ronald Zehrfeld and Peter Kurth.
