CHILDREN OF THE MIST

Screening at Cinema Bad Saarow

Followed by a film talk with Hà Lệ Diễm

DI is a 13-year-old girl living in a North Vietnamese village. She is lucky enough to be one of the first generation of children to have access to education, but she has to convince her parents that studying is not a waste of time and money. Otherwise she would be trapped in the village all her life, „just like a frog in a well“.

DI belongs to the Hmong ethnic minority, where women traditionally marry from the age of 12. In this society, marriage is associated with a controversial and dangerous tradition: „bride kidnapping“. If a boy is interested in a girl, he organizes her abduction before forcing her into his own home.

„Children of the Mist“ is a documentary about the conflict between tradition and self-determination. Director Dien Ha Le received the award for Best Director at the Amsterdam Documentary Film Festival.
