A look at the GDR shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall

In a private coal yard in East Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg in the winter of 1988/89, a resolute female boss rules with wit and intelligence and enjoys the respect of her seven male employees. Behind their rough facades, vulnerability, alcohol, prison, family, defection from the republic, and other taboos become visible. With „Who's Afraid of the Bogeyman?“, Helke Misselwitz succeeds in creating a poignant social study in which the protagonists, through careful questioning, willingly „let people look into their hearts.“ Afterwards, director Annekatrin Hendel speaks with Helke Misselwitz about a GDR reality shortly before the fall of the Wall—a time when no one yet knew that the world would fundamentally change just a few months later.
