East German longing

What is it like today, in an increasingly lonely world, to live in close proximity to other people? Using the small town of Prenzlau as an example, Simon Strauss explores whether community is still possible in times of media-fueled self-righteousness, how it can succeed, when it fails, and what political significance comes with being close to one another.

The author, born in 1988, studied classical studies and history in Basel, Poitiers, and Cambridge. He received his doctorate from Humboldt University of Berlin and is currently, among other things, an editor for the arts and features section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
