War as a real-time show, as a propaganda machine used by all sides for their own purposes: A haunting documentary about the beginning of the Syrian conflict, awarded at the Venice Film Festival. Obaidah Zytoon is a Syrian radio DJ. With the beginning of the uprising in Syria, she starts recording the lives of her friends – later supplemented by footage from Danish documentary filmmaker Andreas Dalsgaard. She shows the initial euphoria when a peaceful success of the protest movement still seemed possible – the brief intuition of freedom that gripped the young people. Happy and intimate moments of living together. But soon the mood changes. Violence escalates on all sides; good and evil become increasingly difficult to tell apart.
