Really? Waking up in the morning, reaching for the phone, reading the latest news, unable to believe what has happened once again: Trump's unbridled narcissism and its consequences for the world, Putin's horrific, stalled war of aggression against Ukraine, the planless Iran war disregarding international law with its far-reaching consequences for the people in the Middle East and for the global economy. Europe's ultra-right parties are steadily gaining support, and in Germany the AfD is now achieving high approval ratings in the West as well. The first tipping point of the climate system has been irreversibly crossed.
The world, it seems, is out of joint. The tectonic plates of the post-war world order: shifted; categories of values once thought secure no longer apply. We search for words to express our own bewilderment and often get no further than helpless phrases. Strengthen Europe, save the democratic form of state, defend the freedom of art—yes, of course, but how is that done, and what can each individual contribute? Become an activist? Or rather emigrate?
Or maybe make films? But can films actually achieve anything? We reply with the great François Truffaut: „Film is not life, but it can say more about life than life itself.“
REALLY is the motto of this year's festival.
This, too, can be associated with it: The social and economic impacts of artificial intelligence are currently sweeping over the world—and that, it seems, is only the beginning of a threatening, unforeseeable cultural shift. AI is making truth and lies ultimately indistinguishable, threatening entire career fields, and also changing filmmaking. Whether and how responsible handling of AI in film production and beyond is possible is also a topic this year at „FILM OHNE GRENZEN“.
How we experience current reality, how we live in it and sometimes simply try to survive, all of this offers rich material for stories. This year, we want to show you particularly credible, realistic, truthful films: films that take up and reflect the fragile realities in which we must find our way, and whose heroes and heroines fight back against them. REAL films as an antidote to fake news and artificial worlds of illusion, films to hold onto in uncertain times.
