Screening in the cultural barn Gut Eibenhof
Screening at the Kulturscheune Gut Eibenhof
The FILM WITHOUT BORDERS Festival is organizing an exciting youth program again this year. Students of the 8th grade from the Europaschule Storkow provide the youth jury this year and selected the winning films for this year’s school cinema during a one-week workshop.
Together with filmmakers Anna Faroqhi and Haim Peretz, the young people watched one documentary or feature film a day at the Schukurama cinema in Beeskow, which could fit this year’s festival theme of CONFIDENCE. The main topics were youth and role images, racism, poverty and education. The youth jury decided on two great films:
NENEH SUPERSTAR (France 2022), directed by Ramzi Ben Sliman and for SCHOOLS OF THIS WORLD (France 2021), directed by Émilie Thérond. The youth jury will present the two films at the festival and explain their decisions.
Friday, September 1, 2023 FILM WITHOUT BORDERS School Cinema at Kulturscheune Gut Eibenhof:
9:30 am: Neneh Superstar (France 202), directed by Ramzi Ben Sliman.
When 12-year-old Neneh is accepted at the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet School, she can hardly believe her luck. Dancing has always been her passion. As the only black girl at the school, however, she soon realizes that despite her undisputed talent, she has a harder time than her peers. Especially the tradition-conscious principal Marianne Belage makes Neneh feel that she is not really welcome. But Neneh confidently fights on for her big dream, unaware that Madame Belage is guarding a secret that connects her to the little ballerina.
Oumy Bruni Garrel shines in Ramzi Ben Sliman’s touching family film as the spirited Neneh, who together with her family courageously and confidently stands up against prejudice, racism and injustice. In addition to the convincing actors, NENEH SUPERSTAR inspires with beautiful dance choreography and stirring music – a wonderful family film.
12:15 pm: SCHOOLS OF THIS WORLD (France 2023), directed by Èilie Thérond.
SCHOOLS OF THIS WORLD tells the story of Svetlana, Sandrine and Taslima. The three teachers teach children and young people in places that are hardly accessible for “normal” teaching – in a nomad tent under the snow cover of Siberia, in a hut in Burkina Faso and on a school boat in Bangladesh. Yet they share a common goal: to help their students find their way to a better future through education. They turn their mission into a true adventure, going far beyond mere teaching: with determination and joy, they teach children to read and write, educate, fight for equal opportunities and preserve ancient cultures.
Visits to the school cinema are only possible after prior registration of school classes.
