JOYLAND

Screening in the cultural barn Gut Eibenhof

In his feature film debut, Pakistani director Saim Sadiq tells a very touching queer love story in a Pakistani world deeply rooted in patriarchal and traditional values. In JOYLAND, we are immersed in the life of the dreamy Haider, an outsider in his family. Haider, who does not find himself in his intended role, lives a life financed by his wife Mumtaz, a happy and successful beautician. With the appearance of a job offer in a dance establishment, Haider’s life takes a dramatic turn. He enters the glittering world of show business and becomes a backup dancer for the transsexual singer Biba.

JOYLAND is a colorful and sensitive portrait of a love story that unfolds amidst the restrictions and tacit barriers of an extended family in Pakistan. With a keen sense of nuance, the film spins a narrative that moves and invites reflection in equal measure.

The film premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the 2023 Academy Awards (Oscars) for Best International Film.
