THE NEIGHBORGHOOD STORYTELLER IN COOPERATION WITH WOMEN FOR WOMEN International

Screening in the cultural barn Gut Eibenhof

German premiere

The young Asmaa was tragically driven out of her home country Syria. Her fate as a wife and mother seemed already prescribed at the age of 16. But Asmaa manages to build a new identity as a storyteller. She reads aloud to children in the neighborhood, giving the children in the Zaatari Jordan refugee camp not only a little confidence, but also a more dignified life for herself. As Asmaa’s firstborn daughter hits puberty, memories of her own childhood without education surface and inspire her to start a new reading aloud project with teenage girls. Asmaa is determined to raise a generation of successful women who can envision a self-determined future despite the complexities of life as a refugee and the conservative mentality of the community.

A film about human resilience and the power to turn deprivation into opportunity.

Followed by film discussion with filmmaker Alejandra Alcala, protagonist Asmaa Rashed, and Women for Women International Director Caroline Kent.

The non-profit organization WOMEN FOR WOMEN INTERNATIONAL supports women who have experienced war and conflict in rebuilding their lives.
